UWW-TV News Update: From the UW-Whitewater Announcement Service – Email Phishing Alert

According to the UW-Whitewater Announcement Service, students on campus have been receiving suspicious phishing e-mails.

Campus members have been given the following warning via e-mail this morning:

Email Phishing Attempt 

A malicious phishing email has been making its way around campus this morning. The email claims to be coming from a UW-Whitewater student or staff member and is asking you to click on a link in order to update your settings. Please DO NOT select this link.

The SUBJECT of the email is: “Settings Error”

The BODY reads: “You are still using the old security settings. Please visit maintenance portal below to Automatically switch to the new mail settings to avoid service interruption.”
If you have selected the link, please contact the Help Desk immediately, (262) 472-4357. 

Some of the warnings that the email is phishing:

  • Urgency and fear in the message – message is in all bold type, and threatens the user that they must submit the form or not be able to send email.
  • Misspellings (“cant”), incorrect capitalization “… Update … You .. Mail.”
  • Technical inaccuracies – mail-box migrating from Outlook to Gmail.
  • Email address is not from UW-Whitewater.
  • UW-Whitewater is not migrating email platforms.
